Press Release – Technical University of Crete
The establishment and operation of the Rural Crete Observatory (RCO) was announced on Monday 26 August 2019 at the offices of the Region of Crete, at a meeting of the Regional Governor Mr Stavros Arnaoutakis with the Rector of the Technical University of Crete, Professor Evangelos Diamantopoulos, and the President of the Ploigos Educational Development Company, Mr Haris Roditakis. Also present were the Scientific Coordinator of the Rural Crete Observatory, Associate Professor Nikolaos Skoutelis of the School of Architecture; the Coordinator of the Observatory, Dr Chryssa Pagalou; and the Director of Ploigos, Mr George Zervos.
The Region of Crete establishes the Rural Crete Observatory (RCO), responding for the first time to the need for a Regional Structure which will operate in an interdisciplinary manner to contribute to and substantially support the planners and decision-makers concerned with the Cretan countryside, and Cretan society as the ultimate recipient of the actions proposed in general.
The Rural Crete Observatory aims to monitor, investigate and systematically record the dynamics of Cretan rural villages and monuments of nature and culture in conjunction with rural occupations, in order to present planners and decision-makers with specialised proposals for the revitalisation and resettlement of the countryside, in terms of sustainable development.
The RCO is a Structure established by the partnership between the Region of Crete, the Technical University of Crete and the Ploigos Educational and Development Company, which will oversee the creation and management of a database dedicated to the Cretan countryside, the Cretan landscape and employment.
Objectives of the Rural Crete Observatory (RCO):
- Monitoring of the Cretan housing stock, recording the natural, spatial and anthropogenic characteristics of the villages and monuments of nature and culture, in order to identify relationships in their modern dynamic course.
- Creation and gradual enrichment of an electronic database on the Cretan countryside, the Cretan landscape and employment, using interdisciplinary research data.
- Suggestions and proposals for further actions by the stakeholders and municipalities of Crete.
- Providing Informal Education/Information and Event Planning on environmental and landscape issues, in accordance with the sustainability principle.
- Collaboration with research institutes, universities and institutions in Greece and abroad.
The proposed Structure has already been piloted, studying and refining the research criteria on the Lasithi Plateau. The Scientific Coordinator is Assistant Professor Despina Dimelli of the School of Architecture, Technical University of Crete
